PATHOLOGY DATA

 
Location: Rectum.  
   
Gross findings:

Tumor size 4 x 3 x 2 cm.

Cut surface is soft, white.

Regional lymph nodes: 3

   
Microscopic findings: Tissue sections show proliferation of malignant epithelial glands. Epithelial cells have small, basophilic, irregular nuclei and abundant cytoplasm. Cytoplasm contains muscin. Tumor cells arranged in glands. Mitotic figures are not evident. The tumor cells invaded the muscularis propria and subserosa. The stroma is infiltrated by large numbers of inflammatory cells. Tumor necrosis and blood vessel invasion are not revealed. Lymph nodes show hyperplasia.
